The useful thing a stand does for a phone or tablet is get the screen off the desk and up to an angle you are not craning your neck to read. Everything else is a detail on top of that.

For phones, the choice is between a simple prop and a charging dock. A prop is cheap and works with any phone and any case. A MagSafe or charging dock holds the phone and powers it in the same movement, which is what you want beside a bed or at the edge of a desk — but it is tied to the charger it was designed around, so check the product page for which.

For tablets, weight decides it. A 10-inch tablet in a case is heavy enough that a light stand will slide when you tap the screen, so look for a wide base or an adjustable mount that spreads the load. Laptop risers are a different job again — they lift the screen toward eye level, which is the single cheapest fix for looking down at a laptop all day.
